Quick answer
The short answer
The best home tutor for your child is the one who has taught your child's class and board, has had ID and academic documents checked, can reach your home reliably at the agreed time, teaches one-to-one, and explains in a way your child can follow, which you judge in a demo lesson. Ratings, tutor counts and advertising tell you less than these checks. Wavefront Home Tuition matches tutors this way across India, with home tutors where a suitable local tutor is available and live online lessons anywhere. The first demo class is free.
Where parents in India find home tutors
| Source | Good for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Referral from another parent | A tutor already tested with a similar child | Whether the tutor knows your child's class and board, not only the friend's |
| Tuition bureau or matching service | A tutor matched to class, board, subject and area, with someone to call if it goes wrong | What is checked before a tutor is sent, and the replacement policy |
| Directory, app or listing site | Browsing many profiles quickly | Whether profiles and reviews are checked, and who helps if the tutor stops coming |
| A teacher from a local school | Close knowledge of the school syllabus | The school's rules on teachers tutoring their own students |
The six checks that decide the best tutor
- Subject and board fit. Ask what the tutor has taught for your child's class and board. A strong Class 12 Physics tutor is not automatically right for Class 6 Maths, and CBSE, ICSE, IB and state boards expect different answers.
- Checked before the first visit. Relevant ID and academic documents should be checked before a tutor is introduced to your family. Ask who checked them.
- Travel that will last. A tutor who lives far away will start missing lessons in the exam months. Share your exact area and timings so travel is checked before a visit is promised.
- Truly one-to-one. Confirm the lessons are with your child alone and not a small batch in someone's home.
- A demo before you commit. Judge the explanation in a demo lesson, not the CV. The test is whether your child can solve a similar question alone afterwards.
- A replacement if it does not work. Ask what happens if the fit is wrong after three or four weeks. A clear replacement policy matters more than a large tutor count.
Questions to ask before the demo
- Which classes and boards have you taught in the last two years?
- How would you start with a child who is behind in this subject?
- How will you show me progress each month: tests, worksheets or a short report?
- Which days and times can you commit to through the exam months?
- How much homework do you set, and do you check it?
What to watch in the demo lesson
Sit in for the first ten minutes if your child is young, then step away. A good tutor asks questions before explaining, checks what your child already knows and adjusts the pace. At the end, ask your child to explain one idea back to you. If they can, the explanation worked.
Warning signs
- Fees or long packages demanded before any demo.
- No clear answer about which documents were checked.
- Promises of fixed marks or ranks.
- Frequent late arrivals or cancellations in the first weeks.
- Lessons that become homework-copying sessions rather than teaching.
Home tutor or live online tutor?
A home tutor suits younger children and students who focus better with someone beside them. Live online lessons widen the choice of specialist tutors and remove travel, which helps for senior Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Accountancy, IB and coding. Both should be one-to-one with a checked tutor. If no suitable tutor can reach your area, a strong online tutor is usually better than a weak local one.
When to change the tutor
Give a new tutor three to four weeks. If your child still cannot work through questions independently, avoids the lessons, or the tutor misses sessions without notice, ask for a replacement rather than waiting for the next test result.
